Some facts about Ph.d degree and ph.ds, joted points are taken from other articles.
- Getting a Ph.D. is intellectually rewarding but not necessarily financially rewarding.
- If being a Ph.D. student sounds like a monk-like existence, that’s because in some ways, it is.
- Obtaining a Ph.D. means being a starving student for another five years or more. Giving up financial security for the pursuit of new knowledge is noble to some but foolish to others.
- Keep in mind that Ph.D. students tend to be extremely intelligent and to love their field of study. To them, academic work is play, and many enjoy studying night and day.
- Prepare for the stresses of a Ph.D. program by carefully choosing living space and writing out an estimated budget.
- When frustration mounts, keep in mind that there is life outside your department, and most people have never even heard of what you are studying.
- If a big house, expensive cars and luxurious vacations are important to you, then the Ph.D. is probably not the degree for you.
- With few exceptions, people do not grow wealthy by using their Ph.D. training. The overwhelming majority of Ph.D.s just makes a living.
Its been two years and I am still recovering from the aftermath of ph.d. Thinking of my ph.d days take me altogether into another world where computer was the source of happiness where we would run our algorithms and see the result, if the result is good my evening would be good otherwise the other way. Apart from computers, library was anohter thing was most important in our life, like wise writing reports etc.....Basically you consider your office room as your world and the computer, books, etc would form family members. Those who were engaged broke up with their girl/boy friend with in an year, those who were married got seperated and those who joined ph.d while single remained so for another half decade. Still i am single...is it the professional hazard or we ph.ds just become so different from the rest fo the normal people...........
